| Performance 5 | Sound 7 | Soundtracks to big-budget movies are rarely good and this one is no exception. It’s not a huge mystery why this happens, the idea is to get a number of popular artists to throw in an old song, or better yet compose a new song, yet what usually results is a number of tracks that do anything buy blend together. This soundtrack benefits in the new music category from Madonna ("Beautiful Stranger"), Lenny Kravitz ("American Woman") and REM ("Draggin’ The Line"), but it still comes up short. It isn’t so much that these songs aren’t good, in fact REM’s take on the classic is quite good, the problem here is rather that as a collection, these songs are unimpressive and uninspired. The Who’s "My Generation" was recorded live for the BBC back in 1965 and sounds every bit of it, but other than that the album sounds relatively good. At its essence though, this album is based upon the hope that you will find yourself unable to live without the Lenny Kravitz single or the new Madonna song and be lead immediately to the nearest music store cash register by your wallet. We, however, think you can do better, much better. |
