| Performance 7 | Sound 8 | The Beastie Boys are known more for hip-hop Schitck than musical talent. Since their blockbuster 1986 record License To Ill, The Beasties have developed their style to the point where they have been releasing cohesive, highly stylized hip-hop records. That is until Hello Nasty. Don't get me wrong, "Intergalactic" is one of the Beasties best tracks ever, but under no circumstances do I ever want to hear any of the Beasties try to seriously sing. They shouldn't sing because it is clearly not their forte'. Cut 4 "Song For The Man" proves my point well. Cut 15 "I Don't Know" just takes the concept too far. As a good friend of mine noted, Hello Nasty is Paul's Boutique gone astray. If you're a Beasties loyalist, as I am, you'll want to own this record. Otherwise, unless you can't get enough of "Intergalactic" on the radio, you may want to skip this one. |
