Up until Midnite Vultures I have held the opinion that Beck simply sucked. "I’m a loser baby – so why don’t you kill me" truer words have never been spoken. While others are proclaiming Beck as a musical genius, I simply didn’t get it. It was as if someone had handed out instructions but forgot to give them to me.

One thing I did get about Beck is the fact he is a dork. I know that isn’t a very nice thing to say, but it is true. You can imagine he was the kid who got his ass kicked in school for no reason whatsoever. With those niceties aside, Beck has shows a sense of humor and a funky sensibility on Midnite Vultures that has swayed my opinion about Beck as an artist. Speaking of The Artist, many Beck fans I have spoken to have made mention of how Midnite Vultures is an homage to early Prince records. The cut "Peaches and Cream" is perhaps the most obvious reference. There are moments in "Get Real Paid" where you’d swear that Beck hired Apolonia 6 do his backup vocals. Add in the little percussive elements reminiscent of "Erotic City" and you’ve got an argument for the Prince influence.

Midnite Vultures captures the chic element of the Generation X, East-Side of Los Angeles (places like Los Feliz and Silverlake) pop culture. Melodically Midnite Vultures is pretty strong. The production is pretty cool with lots of techno oriented effects and sonic oddities to keep you on your aura toes. Unlike many other popular artists we’ve featured in recent reviews, the best part of Beck is his sense of humor. His songs aren’t a deep study into much of anything. They are much more about fun. With the economy booming, unemployment at an all time low, the market at over 11,500, us Gen-Xer’s have nothing to bitch about. Beck creates party music with a hip-hop, funky angle that has truly caught on. Midnite Vultures is Beck’s break-through album and is worth of a listen even if you thought his earlier records were lame. Midnite Vultures is not.
