| Performance 7 | Sound 7 | In an effort to both push the envelope and promote more beat-based artists, you’ve probably been noticing more samplers such as ‘Big Dirty Beats’ on the market recently. Obviously, the reasoning behind this involves taking the best from the best and therefore landing on an album which can both support itself as well as introduce multiple artists to the masses. On the second installment of ‘Big Dirty Beats,’ one finds, as advertised, "more organically grown big noisy funky jump up breakbeats." Including tracks from Cirrus, Afrika Bambaataa, Junior Blanks, and a gem from Head Lamp, Volume 2 in what is seemingly slated to become a series, is rather impressive. The major drawback to this album, which is hardly its own fault, is that since each track is by a different artist, the flow one would normally like to see from albums of this genre isn’t really there. Some tracks tend to err more to the House side of things, while others come closer to Electronica. Another thing that may not blow one away here is the recording quality. It’s good, but it doesn’t do much to make itself felt, which really says something in a musical genre that certainly lends itself to a dynamic mix and master. Like this article?
