Cornell Dupree is a name that, although perhaps new to many of us, is well known in blues, R&B, and jazz circuits. Born in 1942, this guitar slinger originated in Fort Worth, Texas, and has long been one of the most sought after studio musicians in the industry. Along with playing on albums for the likes of Harry Belafonte, Joe Cocker, Michael Bolton, Lou Rawls, Roberta Flack, Robert Palmer and Mariah (among others), Carey Cornell Dupree has appeared on better than 2,500 records in his illustrious career.

The flavor of this recording would likely be classified as jazz/R&B, but, the truth be said, its beat to me sounds closer to blues/R&B flavored by the use of a fantastic jazz band. Rhythms such as "Duck Soup" and "Southern Comfort" have a bluesy beat with a funky feel. The horns have a rhythmic flare that make them sound like tasteful blues riffs by a wonderful musician with a jazz influence. In the song "Signed, Sealed, and Delivered," you embark upon a 10-minute journey though a wonderful and original remake of this classic song. With solos from each of the musicians, which, by the way, are absolutely fantastic, I suppose I would expect nothing less from a musician of Cornell Dupree’s caliber. You feel like you have attended a show where you got your money’s worth and then some. I finished this disc somewhat emotionally drained from its musical energy. I find this album to be flat-out fun!

This disc was recorded live at the Lonestar Roadhouse in New York City on May 28th, 1992. I found this information to be particularly important because this recording will leave you feeling like you were there.

Uncle Funky is a HDCD-encoded disc, which reproduces that live feel as good as some of the very best recordings today. It possesses superb dynamics that will instantly engage you to the music. The drums are tight and extremely focused, including one of the best-sounding kick-drums I have ever heard reproduced. With sharp details ranging from the clicking drumsticks at the start of songs to the transient ring of the symbols, this recording will satisfy the most critical listeners. If I find a great piece of music, I am excited. When I find a great piece that is recorded well, I am elated. When I find a piece of music that is this engaging, and recorded with such excellence, I am dancing in the streets. So next time you see this guy in the streets, you’ll know it is me. -- Enjoy!
