Mechanical Animals,
Nothing/Interscope Records
| Performance 8 | Sound 8 |

Why this, why now? Because we are here to save you from yourself, that's why. By now, you've probably heard the two singles from this album, "The Dope Show," and "I Don't Like The Drugs (But The Drugs Like Me)." You may really like these songs, you may even have this album on your shopping list as we speak--well, lend us your ear for a moment if you will. These two songs both have something in common, a great (or in the case of "The Dope Show," outstanding) backbeat. Yet, these two songs are not accurate representatives of the rest of the album.

The rest of the album is good, quite good in fact. However, if you search through 'Animals' looking for another groove like you found on "The Dope Show," you're going to be disappointed and write us comprehensive e-mails comprised solely of spite and venom. We don't need that. Thusly, this is what you will find on this album. More of that thick, dark, Marilyn Manson sound. A little less anti-religious than in the past and a little more accessible, 'Animals' is mostly solid from start to finish. It's recorded, mixed, and mastered in a way that certainly compliments the work, but be warned, buying this--or, for that matter, any--album based solely upon a single you heard is absolutely a recipe for disaster. Thankfully, for what it is, 'Animals' is probably Manson's best, most well-rounded work to date.
