Missy
"Misdemeanor" Elliott’s latest album So Addictive is a funky and very
updated blend of hip-hop and R&B. Elliott continues to work with
Timbaland as mixer and producer. On So Addictive it appears that
Timbaland has overcome any blandness that some critics have accused him
of lately. So Addictive is a very unique-sounding album, featuring an
infectious beat and a bass line that manages to work well, combined
with futuristic strobe-like staccato rhythms.
So Addictive features several notable guest stars, including Redman,
Method Man, Ludacris, Ginuwine, Eve, Busta Rhymes, Timbaland, Da Brat,
Jade, Lil’ Mo and Jay-Z. I particularly liked the upbeat "Get Ur Freak
On," with its undeniable Indian sound and catchy bass line.
Another catchy tune, "One Minute Man," is featured in two different
versions on this 16-track album. Unlike "Get Ur Freak On," "One Minute
Man" is a laid-back track that relies more on Elliott’s vocals. Elliott
gives her compelling voice quite the workout on this album, noticeably
more so than in the past. With the exception of "4 My People," which I
found somewhat dull, I enjoyed the majority of this alternative,
techno-infused R&B hip-hop album.
This DVD-Audio album is mixed in 5.1 and features a clean and dynamic
mix. The rear channels are well-used, with effects and background
vocals. This album is remarkably free of extraneous background noise
and dynamic compression, most likely due to the higher-resolution
DVD-Audio format. It is becoming clear that the studios are becoming
more experienced with, and are taking advantage of, the increased
capabilities of DVD-Audio. Fans of hip-hop and R&B should not
hesitate to buy So Addictive and experience the latest in DVD-Audio.
