Jesse Helms, The US Senate's most outspoken proponent of artistic censorship, reportedly attended a U2 concert as a special guest of Bono in Washington DC with his grandchildren according to ArrowFM.com.
Helms said of the show "It was filled to the gills, and people were moving back and forth like corn in the breeze. They had the crowd going wild. When Bono shook his hips, that crowd shook their hips." The concert was, however, a bit loud for the Senator, who turned down his hearing aids and covered his ears during the show because he said it was "the noisiest thing I ever heard. It was so loud I couldn't really understand what he was saying." Helms was most famous for his opposition to government support of the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) and his fight against "obscene" art such as the erotic photographer Robert Maplethorpe.
